Belief in God is a choice, and everyone’s relationship with God is individual. But, thinking about the values and principles associated with spirituality can be helpful when thinking about narcissistic abuse.
My grandmother used to say that “God helps those who help themselves,” an interesting proverb that seems to straddle reality and spirituality.1 For whatever reasons, narcs are content to remain as they are despite the turmoil that surrounds them. Narcs are generally very impulsive. They do what they want, the repercussions be dammed. Granted, their patterns are strongly ingrained, but if alcoholics can quit drinking with determination and daily commitment, so could narcs improve if they wanted to.... but they don't want to. Committing to be a different and better person requires shifting their world-view and sense of personal identity. Narcs are generally quite content with their maladaptive styles that put themselves at the center of the universe. They are bullies who justify their behavior with illogical utterances, and fight dirty regardless of the cost.
God is not going to help a self-absorbed narc committed to being critical, controlling and cruel. Frankly, narcs can't see themselves as being helped by God, because they pretend to be God, themselves.
With humility and faith, the rest of us can take necessary action to help ourselves when subjected to narcissistic manipulation and abuse- whether the source of that abuse is personal such as from a partner, parent, adult child, friend, or colleague, or organizational such as from an employer, political entity, biased media, or medical power.
This is a proverb that dates back to ancient Greece but is often attributed to Benjamin Franklin who used it in his 18th century almanac. However, Ben Franklin did himself say quite a bit on liberty and tyranny which applies to personal agency and today’s censorship of dissent which promotes sanctioned, but suspect, narratives, such as: "Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.”
